Overview

Bao Kigogo is an expansive four-row mancala played by the Gogo (Wagogo) people across the central plateau of Tanzania's Dodoma Region. The game was first recorded in 1911 by German Lutheran missionary Martin Klamroth, who observed matches in the settlement of Mpapua (modern Mpwapwa) and documented its rules in Archiv für Anthropologie. Structurally related to Bao Kiarabu (the coastal Swahili name for Hawalis), Bao Kigogo unfolds on a generous 4×12 grid. It combines continuous counterclockwise multi-lap relay sowing with an asymmetric opening configuration, requiring players to engineer deep tactical cascades that terminate in empty front-row pockets to strip opponent files.
