개요

Sungka is the national mancala game of the Philippines, cherished across the archipelago and sustained by diaspora communities in North America, Europe, and East Asia. Historically played predominantly by women and girls, the game boasts a rich lineage dating back to pre-colonial maritime trade. The earliest surviving written record appears in the 1692 Bisaya dictionary of Spanish Jesuit priest Father José Sanchez, who recorded it under the name Kunggit, played with cowrie shells upon boat-shaped wooden blocks. While closely allied with the wider Austronesian Congkak family, Sungka is distinguished by widespread Philippine traditions of counter-clockwise movement (documented by the National Historical Institute, with each player controlling the store to their right) alongside regional clockwise variants, as well as an extensive tradition of folk riddles (bugtong) and divination.
